Naked singles are the simplest deduction in sudoku, and they solve most easy puzzles almost by themselves. Look at any empty cell and ask what numbers are already used in its row, its column, and its 3x3 box.
If eight of the nine digits are already ruled out by those three groups, only one number remains. That number belongs in the cell. No guessing, no branching logic, just elimination.
